POSITION SUMMARY:

Perform chemical and/or microbiological procedures (e.g., GCMS, ICPMS, atomic absorption) on water and wastewater samples.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform chemical, bacteriological, or biological tests on water and wastewater samples. 
  • Uses gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers (GCMS), spectrophotometers, or other advanced technical equipment to analyze samples for microbiological or chemical constituents.  Tests/instrumentation may include:
    • ICP/ ICP-MS
    • GCMS
    • Graphite furnaces
    • Flow Injection Analyzers
    • BOD, COD, TSS
  • Reviews, approves, and enters all resulting data into the LIMS system and all other appropriate databases; 
  • Participates in and oversees the preparation of samples for subsequent analysis;
  • Prepares and maintains reports to certify data and satisfy EPA requirements for environmental test procedures;
  • Assists in achieving compliance with new regulations that may affect the Commission’s water and wastewater treatment facilities;
  • Researches new technological advancements for laboratory use;
  • Conducts special research projects for the Operations Unit Coordinator/Laboratory Director.
  • Employee may perform other related duties as required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, or life sciences
  • 3 years of senior environmental laboratory analyses experience performing routine/wet chemistry testing, microbiology testing, and advanced analyses on water and wastewater
  • Thorough knowledge of proper laboratory procedures and good laboratory practices (GLP);
  • Knowledge of environmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), EPA Approved Methods and Standard Methods procedures, and MDE applicable regulations and guidelines;
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive analytical reports and to interpret test results;
