Job Description


Now seeking Experience Food Scientists! Apex Life Sciences has an opportunity for experienced food scientists to join an established company in the Pittsburgh area for a permanent position. 

Responsibilities

  1. Develop new products and modify existing products to meet various customer needs.  Prepare samples and travel to customer sites for trials.
  2. Provide technical support to customers through consultation, providing technical documents, making product recommendations and on-site problem solving.
  3. Investigate customer complaints. Conduct root cause analysis.
  4. Independently carry out research projects. Design and conduct experiments and perform statistical analysis.
  5. Work with plant to optimize processing and scale up production.
  6. Provide technical support internally to sales/marketing and machinery departments.
  7. Draft technical reports, presentations for management and customers, trial reports and customer visit reports.
  8. Design and draft product data sheets, safety data sheets, and prepare statements for nutritional info, GMO, allergen status etc.
  9. Provide support to QA/QC to operations as needed
  10. Provide back up support for quality assurance/compliance programs including SQF, AIB, Organic, etc.

Education

  1. BS with 5 to 10 years technical service experience.

Functional/Technical Expertise

  1. Preferably, PhD degree in food science, chemistry, interfacial science or related area. 
  2. Experience in fats and oils, baking science, food product research, experimental design and statistical analysis is a plus.

  1. Demonstrated communication and technical skills. Both verbal and written communication skills are important.

  3. The candidate must be a quick learner and show flexibility in a changing working environment, assignments and working schedule.
  4. Good organization skills, detail oriented, and reliable.
  5. Strong problem solving skills.  Self-Motivated by problem solving and inherent curiosity to understand how things work.
  6. Ability to work effectively in a team and with staff in non-technical positions.  Must be a team player who demonstrates interpersonal skills and freely and openly exchanges ideas with colleagues and key contacts in other departments. 
  7. Willing to travel to customer sites up to 30%
  8. Experience in a supervisory capacity is a plus.
