Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated contract Senior Research Associate to support large molecule research and development laboratory scale cell culture, purification, and analytics. This position will be responsible for producing antibodies to support R&D and pre-clinical activities at the 96-well plate to 20-L bioreactor scale, purifying them using small scale techniques including use of AKTA chromatography systems, and characterizing antibodies using analytical techniques such as chromatography and icIEF.

Central to the role is a willingness to learn, build, and adapt new processes and tools across disciplines including bioprocess development and protein analytics. The candidate should be able to demonstrate the ability to organize, balance, and execute a wide range of tasks, and to work collaboratively and constructively with Achaogen lab personnel and managers.  In this role, the candidate will work closely with process development and research team members to advance a large molecule pipeline.



Key Responsibilities

  • Independently set up, transfect, and harvest supernatants from CHO cells growing on shake flasks or deep well plates.
  • Design experiments and analyze data.
  • Execute platform antibody purification processes and optimize as needed.
  • Setup and conduct analytical studies to assess developability of purified antibodies.
  • Prepare media, buffers, and other reagents and solutions.
  • Order reagents and consumables and maintain cell culture equipment.
  • Present work in group meetings.
  • Comply with good housekeeping, recordkeeping, and company safety practices.



Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or related scientific field with 2+ years laboratory experience.
  • Aseptic technique.
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture (CHO) for mAb or recombinant protein production.
  • Familiarity with transient transfection of suspension cells.
  • Bioreactor (glass or waves) operations is a plus.
  • Antibody purification using FPLC and AKTA purification systems.
  • Experience conducting protein analytics such as HPLC and icIEF.
  • Familiarity with Fortebio Octet is highly desirable.
  • Ability to multi-task with attention to detail and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work on a collaborative environment.
  • Good problem-solving, organization, and communication skills are essential.
