Job Description


Under the general supervision of the facility LAS or designee, the incumbent independently implements daily work assignments in a functional component of a facility.  This responsibility includes: daily work assignments, animal husbandry duties, training other employees, assembling sufficient and appropriate supplies, verifying that daily tasks are properly completed, maintaining assigned areas according to USDA, PHS AAALAC and client regulations and standards, and recognizing inconsistencies in SOPs and reporting them.  The Senior Animal Technician (SAT) acts as primary back-up to the Principal Animal Technician (PAT) for all emergency or critical situations and possesses a working knowledge of husbandry/housing situations and environmental control systems.  The incumbent demonstrates the ability to independently perform all required duties of multiple areas of the facility with only general supervision.  This is the journey (operational) level position..

 The animals cared for may include but are not limited to: hyenas, monkeys, cats, rabbits, rodents, ectotherm and invertebrate species.

 The primary focus of this position will be working with rodents.

 HEALTH MONITORING

  1. Recognizes and promptly reports sick or injured animals to designated work leader/supervisor.  Assist in generating the computer driven Morning Health Report by entering relevant and appropriate information.
  2. Performs routine health examinations on a variety of animals
  3. Administers medication as prescribed by the OLAC clinical veterinary staff.
  4. Measures, records and maintains animal health data.  Maintains animal health records according to SOPs and USD/PHS regulations which may include physical examination data.

ANIMAL CARE DUTIES

  1. Transfers animals from dirty to clean cages.  Washes and disinfects cages, feed dishes and water bowls
  2.  Feeds and waters animals daily according to instructions which may include the preparation and administration of special diets, the segregation of certain animals, the use of power saw and/or autoclave in that preparation.
  3. Shovels, sweeps, mops and disinfects facility floors/areas, walls and/or perches.  Keeps equipment, feed and bedding in a neat, orderly and appropriately stored manner.

 FACILITY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Trains other employees as directed by the LAS.  Promptly informs the work leader/supervisor of the need for additional equipment, protective clothing, occupational health information, or training for personnel assigned to the facility.
  2. Maintains an organized and clean work environment that pertains to animal rooms but also includes: common areas such as corridors, cage wash rooms, procedure rooms, anterooms, storage areas and grounds.  Assist in facility grounds and maintenance work.
  3. Informs the work leader/supervisor of the need for facility and equipment renovations and/or repairs.  Makes suggestions of appropriate renovations and/or repairs per USDA, PHS and UCB regulations.
  4. In accordance with USDA/PHS regulations assures that feed, bedding and other supplies are stored properly and used in a timely manner and according to SOPs.

RECORD KEEPING

  1. Measures, records and maintains animal rooms and equipment data.  This may include the use of automated monitoring equipment and devices.
  2. Assures that animals housed in the facility are properly identified, that individual animal records are up-to-date and available as needed, and that current SOPs are posted or available for each animal room.
  3. Assists in the collection and organization of data needed for billing and inventory.
