Lab Technician - Polymer Formulation and Testing

Job Description:

The primary role is the formulation and characterization of thermosetting polymers according to directions as well as processing and testing of fiber-reinforced structural composites.

Components of the job include resin mixing, curing, specimen preparation, set-up and use of computer-controlled test equipment, data reporting and record keeping.

  • Standard polymer tests including Dynamic Mechanical Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry
  • Simple machining of mechanical specimens using a saw and router table
  • Preparation of specimens for microscopic examination, and
  • some molding processes including fiber composite processing
  • Testing of materials for strength, stiffness, and fracture properties. Example: Tensile testing

A background in materials science, polymer science, or chemistry (with materials or polymers familiarity) is desired.

Typical Day: Formulate resin mixtures from given components and thermally cure resin plaques. Cut mechanical specimens from plaques. Prep specimens, perform the tests, and record the results.

Environment: Laboratory. Team environment with individual initiative to manager workload.

Qualifications:

Experience in a lab, either at work or for course work. Both working in laboratory fume hood and with computer-controlled analytical instruments.

Experience with mechanical characterization of polymers. Organic chemistry and polymer science desired.

Proficient with Excel. Will be documenting testing results in Excel.
