Job Description

The Principal Animal Technician independently implements daily work assignments in a functional component of an animal facility.  He/she also serves as work leader for all SATs, assesses and determines appropriate staffing assignments and directs daily operations of the facility in the absence of the Laboratory Animal Care Supervisor (LAS).

The PAT’s responsibilities are primarily at the facility level within the Office of Laboratory Animal Care (OLAC).  The primary client groups served are research staff and faculty.

The Principal Animal Technician (PAT) reports directly to the Laboratory Animal Care Supervisor (LAS)  The PAT performs all duties of the Senior Animal Technician (SAT) (refer to SAT position description), and serves as work leader for all SATs and primary backup to the LAS.  The PAT assesses and determines appropriate staffing assignments in the absence of the LAS and directs daily operations of the facility.  As work leader, the PAT trains animal care staff in the proper use of machinery and equipment, ensures that all SOPs and animal use protocols are being followed, ensures that proper protective clothing and safety gear are used when appropriate, coordinates animal transfers between facilities with the administrative office, and independently operates satellite facilities. Must have a valid California Drivers License.


  1. Keeps a written record of the repairs (log) and follows up with Physical Plant to ensure timely and efficient completion of each item reported.  Tracks and monitors the use of all space throughout the facility (animal housing, procedural, service, and storage areas) and works with the LAS in assigning the space.

  1. Oversees completion and timely submission of the Morning Health Report daily.

5.           Monitors the health of research animals.

6.           Performs all animal care duties as outlined in SAT performance description.

7.           Carries out facility responsibilities as stated in SAT performance description.


  1. Promptly informs the LAS of the need for additional equipment, protective clothing, occupational health information, or training for personnel assigned to the facility.

  1. Promptly informs the LAS of personnel problems (including situations that may require training, corrective or disciplinary action).
