Polymer Chemist - Coatings

Apex Life Sciences is searching for a Polymer Chemist for a contract-to-hire role in Toronto, ON. Our client is a coatings manufacturer and this position is a 3-month contract-to-hire role. This person will be responsible for the formulation work, design, execution, and implementation of product development projects focused in the area of anti-corrosion coatings for pipelines, from concept and lab to commercialization. The polymer chemist will also provide technical support to the manufacturing team for raw material substitutions and maintenance of existing coating products.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop formulation and processes for new products in the lab
  • Investigate raw material substitutions for existing products
  • Transferring products to the field and manufacturing in an efficient and timely manner
  • Lead, plan, coordinate, delegate, execute and report on new polymeric adhesive and coating development projects from concept to manufacturing to full commercialization
  • Interface with production facility to perform the necessary plant trials to prove the feasibility of new products and processes, and to provide technical support to manufacturing
  • Liaison with material suppliers for supply of equipment, chemicals etc. crucial for advancing the development programs
  • Maintain laboratories and equipment in clean, safe and operative condition
  • Participate in safety and 5S programs in CR & D
  • Ensure lab materials and routine equipment are in adequate supply

Job Requirements:

  • MSc or PhD degree in chemistry with a background in polymers or coatings
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience as a chemist in a laboratory or manufacturing setting, in polymer chemistry
  • Deep understanding of a broad range of polymer chemistries, polymers adhesive and polyolefins
  • Experience with polymer compounding and analysis such as mass spectrometry, DSC, NMR, FTIR, DMA, etc. is required
  • Proficiency in working “hands-on” with chemicals, mechanical devices, instruments and machines
  • Track record of executing fundamental chemistry research from idea generation to commercialization
  • Creativity and vision to identify new product opportunities and unique approaches
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
