Job Description

Basic Function:

Conducts design assignments for various departments. Directs or leads the work of others from time-to-time. 

Job Functions:

  • Acts as liaison between engineers and designers and keeps management apprised of any problems that could potentially affect the outcome of design projects in a negative manner 
  • Serves as plant-wide or pipeline and terminal resource for all drawings, foreign prints and contractor data 
  • Develops CAD standards 
  • Maintains reference data, drawings and drawing systems 
  • Recommends design changes to manager and/or engineers 
  • Works with manager and Engineers to obtain project information and ensure drawings are accurate and complete 
  • Performs design and drafting assignments related to the refineries or the pipelines and terminals 
  • Oversees outside contractor drawing compliance and when necessary, establishes a sign-off program for all out-going drawings 
  • Develops specialized methods and techniques required for design projects and trains all levels of Designers and Drafters in applications 

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their superior, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion. 

3-5 years of on-the-job experience is required. 

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, or an equivalent combination of education (in a technical related field) and work experience, is required. 


  • Good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of pipeline systems and ability to apply this knowledge.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical practices and instrumentation and instrument loop diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of PLC and HMI (human machine interface) programming.
  • Current knowledge of industry standards and governmental requirements and special training related to Drafting & Design.
  • Ability to train, develops, and mentor designers and drafters of all levels.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication, ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.
  • Advanced reading and writing skills. 

Work Conditions:
Office based with up to 10% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment, and driver based environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, loud noises, vibrations, and working in confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures, weather, and varying road conditions. 

Physical Requirements:
Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, perceiving color differences, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, climbing up to 25ft, ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, and valid State driver’s license and proof of insurance required, and wearing personal protective equipment (beards not permitted). Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, lifting and/or carrying up to 10lbs, and pushing and/or pulling up to 10lbs.
