  1. Summary of Position: Responsible for the daily management of the assigned technical section/department including planning, coordinating and directing operations of the department to meet holding times, provide data of appropriate quality and deliver analytical reports on time.  Must be aware of budget requirements and profitability goals.  (Laboratory Manager supervises >5 FTEs and/or revenue >$1 million).

  1. Direct (Reports to): Laboratory Operations Manager or General Manager or Assistant General Manager

  1.  Primary Responsibilities:
    1. Reviewing analytical work for data integrity and compliance with quality standards.
    2. Supervising department staff and ensuring the quality of service, the technical competence of the staff and any productivity and technical expansion.
    3. Motivating staff through feedback and clear definition of expectations.
    4. Promoting a high degree of morale.
    5. Evaluating department personnel by conducting interviews for potential hires and conducting performance reviews.
    6. Assessing training needs and conducting training as necessary.
    7. Serving as primary communication line to department personnel regarding information and application of policies and procedures.
    8. Participating in development of annual expense budget for the department.
    9. Demonstrating dependability in the completion of assignments within quality, budget and time requirements.
    10. Managing expenditures within the department to ensure group meets profitability goals.
    11. Promoting cooperation and teamwork among staff.
    12. Following policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    13. Other duties as assigned.

  1.   Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     1. Education and/or Experience: BA/BS in chemistry or related science from four year college or university, plus 5 or more years of related experience or 10 plus years related laboratory experience with no degree.  Previous supervisory experience preferred (3-5 years).
    2. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively at a highly technical level both verbally and in writing. Communicate effectively with laboratory management and project management.
    3. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
    4. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  1.    Managerial Responsibilities
    1. Supervising staff assigned to their department and ensuring the quality of service.
    2. Motivating staff through feedback and clearly defining expectations.
    3. Evaluating department personnel by conducting interviews for potential hires and conducting performance reviews.
    4. Determining training needs and assisting with training programs.
    5. Communicating company policies and procedures to their department personnel.
    6. Participating in development of annual expense budget for their department.
    7. Continually improving their department while minimizing down time.

  1.   Responsibilities with respect to Performing Tests
    1. Responsible for assuming laboratory technician and/or analyst duties and responsibilities as necessary.

  1.  Responsibilities with respect to Planning of Tests and Evaluation of Results
    1. Responsible for planning and scheduling of work as necessary. 
    2. Responsible for evaluation of results and secondary data review as necessary.

  1.   Responsibilities for reporting Opinions and Interpretations
    1. Responsible, when necessary, for explanations of results in the form of case narratives or qualifiers on final reports.
