Shipping Technician

Richmond, CA

Pay: $23.70

Overview of Position: 
The Hazardous Materials Shipping Specialist works on a fast paced team at a major research lab facility, responsible for preparing shipments of hazardous and non-hazardous research samples by all modes of transportation (air, ground, water) following federal and international regulations. Samples shipped are critical elements of research and product development projects. 

Job Responsibilities: 
• Follows all safety guidelines, training, and processes, as outlined by customer. 
• Uses expertise in domestic and international regulations (ICAO/IATA, 49CFR, IMO) to prepare shipments of hazardous materials for air, water and ground transportation. 
• Responsible for preparing domestic and international shipments, including determining proper shipping descriptions from regulatory references, accurately completing complex shipping paperwork and applications, determining proper packaging and other applicable regulations and exemptions. 
• Works with international customs brokers and company export compliance groups to arrange clearances and permits for international shipments. Completes international paperwork. 
• Performs recordkeeping and other tasks to ensure full compliance with government regulations. 
• Interacts regularly with customers to understand needs and provide guidance. 
• Identifies improvements needed in work processes to ensure customer service and full compliance, and leads and performs projects to improve operations. 

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
 
• High school diploma required. Some college desired 
• Ability to lift 50-lb containers. This job is occasionally physically demanding with some work performed outdoors in all weather conditions 
• Valid California vehicle driver’s license 
• This is a Safety Sensitive Job subject to Random Drug and Alcohol testing program 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
• Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets and other safety information 
• Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time with/without accommodation 

PREFERED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: 
• Coursework or equivalent experience in hazardous materials training. 
• Knowledge of DOT/IATA regulations covering shipments of hazardous materials by air and ground, and of carrier and airline specific requirements. 
• Knowledge of properties of petroleum products and common laboratory chemicals. 
• HazMat certification
