Scientist I

Position Summary:

The successful candidate for the Molecular Biology Scientist position will become an integral member of the R&D assay development team with responsibility for construct generation and preparation for all cell-based assay development and plasmid transfer to mammalian cells via retroviral/lentiviral transduction. In addition, s/he will participate in assay development as well as evaluate new molecular biology techniques and practices that may advance the company’s capabilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, generate and confirm the quality of expression plasmids required for all mammalian cell-based assay development activities.
  • Regularly monitor and fulfill requests for new plasmid constructions and transfers of existing plasmids to cell lines. Actively maintain the plasmid collection.
  • Use bioinformatics tools (including SnapGene and NCBI databases etc) and strategic thinking for planning and executing molecular constructions.
  • Generate and QC retrovirus and lentiviruses for mammalian gene delivery in vitro.
  • Perform experiments to qualify new technologies to augment capabilities.
  • Communicate regularly with managers and other scientists to ensure orderly completion and transfer of plasmids from Molecular Biology to downstream assay development projects.
  • Maintain good documentation of laboratory work.
  • Participate in departmental lab meeting.
  • Create new cell lines for assay using retroviral/lentiviral transduction of proprietary constructs.
  • Perform QC of cell lines and reagents for R&D and Operations groups.
  • Must follow and uphold departmental and company business procedures and rules.
  • Other duties as required and assigned.

Basic Minimum Qualifications (BMQ):

  • To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill or ability required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years as independent molecular biology contributor is required.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in construct design, cloning and plasmid sequencing in a fast-paced, high-volume environment is essential.
  • Knowledge and resourcefulness in modern methods for molecular biology for construct, virus and mammalian cell line generation.

Education/Experience (BMQ):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry or related discipline.

Additional preferences:

  • Industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • Work with various modes of gene delivery (virus, lipid & electroporation) including retroviral or lentiviral vector systems is highly desirable.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and cell-based assays while working under BSL1/2 is preferred.
  • Flow cytometry/cell sorting, immunofluorescence and Western blotting skills are also desirable.
  • Experience with inducible expression systems and CRISPR genome editing technologies is desirable.
  • Knowledge of and interest in cell biology and signal transduction is a plus.
