Mixer/Molder/Finisher

Mixers perform a full range of material handling duties that typically involve selecting and moving specialized bulk and bin materials such as grains, equipment and product to specified factory areas or storage locations. Other duties and requirements are as described.

The Molder is responsible for operating a wide variety of mechanical, hydraulic, robotic and/or manual presses to compact mix to mold product forming or molding complex products utilizing a combination of specific formulas. As products accuracy requires are greater, a Molder operation includes the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, and various types of precision measuring equipment instruments

Finishing Operator I sets up and operates multiple machines or uses hand tools for repetitive and high production finishing operations to include grinding, cutting to dimensions, dressing, speed testing and small sandblasting. Product handled may be in forms ranging from initial shaping to final finishing.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required of the Molder/Mixer/Finisher

Materials & Products

  • Applies a greater knowledge of a wide variety of materials and product characteristics to make distinctions between complex mix, pressing and finishing techniques. 
  • Responsible for calculating accurate density targets for each mix data and conducting workability tests to ensure the mix is at prescribed consistencies according to given formulas.

Equipment

  • Utilizes a high degree of knowledge of various hydraulic, mechanical, robotic and/or manual presses, and equipment with varying difficulty to compact and mold intricate shapes that hold to tight tolerances.
  • Possesses specific knowledge of a variety of equipment and pressing techniques designed to change the material weight or move the wall thickness to achieve the desired goal.
  • Utilizes various measuring instruments such as calipers, vernier gauges, protractors and Statistical Process Control (SPC) for measurement.
  • Completes a density test and uses data logging and process monitoring by utilizing Statistical Process Control (SPC) formatted systems and procedures. 

Procedures

  • Sets-up mold and determines how the set-ups influence the density distribution of the product. Weighs out required grain, pours grain/mix into mold, uses a level or pin rake to spread the mix, presses to mold piece, removes the piece from the mold and repeats process until grain/mix is gone. 
  • Conducts first piece and periodic product inspection to ensure conformance to blueprint. Makes necessary adjustments based on results. Enters all critical first piece inspection and density information into respective database.
  • Uses a combination of specific formulas (weight/volume, conversion of fractions & millimeters, etc.) and pressing techniques designed to change the material weight or move the thickness to achieve the desired density goal. 
  • Capable of troubleshooting, repairing and utilizing tooling to change or move the thickness of the part ensuring the blueprint thickness tolerance is met.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING TIME

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent experience along with Molder I work experience.
  • General manufacturing skills such as blueprint reading, advanced math skills (measure in standard and metrics using various measuring devices such as calipers, measuring tapes, micrometers, measuring tools), and basic computer skills are required.
