Job Description

Microbiology Technician

Purpose of Job:
The incumbent prepares sample for processing and maintains documentation of process to facilitate analysis procedures.

Job Duties:

  • Read plates and tubes, as required, to determine the number of organisms in the sample. Record findings on worksheet for verification.
  • Write identification onto plates so that client and sample number can be tracked.
  • Pipette sample solution into tubes or plates according to the analysis process being performed. Pour the agar into plates or tubes to begin the growth process.
  • Prepare sample for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending.
  • Collect plates and place them in the incubator for the specified amount of time and temperature.
  • Prepare media and broth for use in pathogen testing as required.
  • Sterilize materials needed for analysis. Autoclave plates before discarding.
  • Perform food poisoning, pH and other analysis tests on sample when requested by the client.
  • Ensure that media and materials are prepared for the next testing sequence.
  • Maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that is required to complete job responsibilities.
  • Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis.

Job Description

  • This position has the responsibilities and authority to identify departures from the quality system or test procedures and document such observations in accordance with the prescribed complaint system.
  • Perform other related tasks as needed.

Knowledge & Skill
The incumbent must have a basic knowledge of microbiology to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain accurate results. Analytical skills are essential to complete analysis procedures and determine the concentration of the microorganism. A general knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System is required to process client data. Physical dexterity is required for measuring, pipetting and transferring sample into plates and tubes. A basic knowledge of personal computers is useful to accurately enter testing data and results. A basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment. Planning skills are useful to maintain supplies of analysis materials and ensure analysis is completed within specified time.

Job Complexity
Testing procedures require precise measurements to be made to avoid problems. Problems can result from faulty testing procedures or improper preparation of the sample. Aseptic methods must be maintained to prevent contamination which can occur daily and may result in repeating the analysis. The microorganisms do not follow the same pattern continuously and may require testing to be repeated. The source of the problem will determine the method of solution. Standard procedures and established guidelines provide the needed information to solve testing problems.

Decision Making or Recommendations
Recommendations are made to the supervisor regarding procedural changes or suggestions. Standard Operating Procedures and federal guidelines establish standards from which solutions can be implemented. Factual data is used to make recommendations that will affect the efficiency of the work unit. Mistakes are identified and easily corrected from the recommendation of the supervisor.
The decisions of the incumbent will impact the client and the progress of the testing procedure.

The incumbent receives regular supervision. The incumbent works toward specific goals and targets that are established by the supervisor. The method of attaining the goals is determined by the incumbent in accordance with SOP’s. Results and worksheet data are reviewed daily by the supervisor. The assigned tasks must be completed within an established time frame to avoid delay in submitting results to the client. Repeating analysis or inaccurate results can strain client relations and increase cost of analysis.

Work Environment
The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials will occur when in the laboratory. Safety equipment of gloves, laboratory coat and eyeglasses may need to be worn depending on the testing process. The incumbent uses the autoclave daily to complete the analysis process. Continuous lifting of analysis materials weighing between 10-50 pounds are necessary to transport media materials. The incumbent can expect extended time spent in a standing position. The incumbent should be able to detect slight variation in shades of colors.
