Job Purpose:

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs clinical laboratory testing of blood, amniotic fluid and dried blood specimens following the lab’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of test examinations.


  • Associates in Medical Laboratory Technology from NYS accredited MLT program or equivalent combination of education and work
  • NYS Department of Education Medical Laboratory Technician License required
  • 1-2 years’ experience preferred

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform tests under supervision by the director or in those specialties or subspecialties in which they are qualified by education, training and experience
  • Under the direction of the laboratory supervisor, assist in the training of technicians, aides and trainees
  • May take on additional “lead role” responsibilities beyond sample testing to assist in the daily operation and maintenance of the laboratory (i.e laboratory safety, instrument maintenance, DI water system monitoring and maintenance)
  • Accessioning, storage and retrieval of patient specimens
  • Complete quality control assays.
  • Preparation of assay buffers and reagents
  • Maintain inventory of assay reagents and raw materials.
  • Assist with daily maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Participate in daily maintenance of laboratory and laboratory equipment.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same
    manner as patient specimens.
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correct problems or immediately notify Lab Supervisor, Assistant Lab Director and/or Lab Director of concerns.
  • Assist in documentation of corrective actions related to test systems that deviate from lab’s established performance specifications.
  • Biohazard waste disposal
  • Participate in Team SOP reviews

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have ability to stand for long periods of time to move about freely.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds
  • Will also work in clinical lab area requiring adherence to lab safety procedures.
