Job Description

The Lead Process Engineer will play an integral role in helping our end client become the authority in cold-chain packaging by identifying and selecting best practices, both internally and externally, to drive the continuous improvement and innovation in the end client's manufacturing endeavors and processes. The Lead Process Engineer will play a leading role in the end client's engineering team in starting up and optimizing manufacturing processes.  The highly qualified candidate will work collaboratively with business, manufacturing, and technical teams to design and implement start-up and optimization programs that achieve operating goals.  The Lead Process Engineer will not only be a seasoned, experienced engineer who thrives on working in a hands-on production environment but will also be skillful in leading and motivating teams of talented people to achieve program goals safely.

This position reports to the Director of Engineering, and is based in Richmond, VA. Compensation and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience level.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Assess processes efficiency, take measurements and analyze/interpret data to put forward recommendations.
  • Identify, prioritize and drive continuous improvement initiatives on end client's processes to improve manufacturing efficiencies, safety and profitability.
  • Develop conceptual design of process equipment and systems, prepare unit operation design specification, perform equipment sizing and calculation, perform design and process simulation and analysis.
  • Coordinate with different stakeholders (engineering, maintenance and operations) to develop scope of work for projects and assist with installation, commissioning and testing.
  • Perform process risk hazards analysis using FMEA method, develop best practices and write procedures and standard operating instruction for operation of equipment.
  • Design process engineering training programs, enforce safety standards, and lead process improvement and problem-solving events (kaizen, lean, etc.)
  • Assist equipment installation and technology deployment across other facilities.
  • Direct and summarize industry intelligence on competitive extruding and converting processes

Experience: 

  • 10+ years’ hands-on manufacturing experience in project management, process engineering role, leadership role, or some combination of the above.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or managerial experience
  • 3 years’ experience in leading the design and implementation of process improvement initiatives
  • 3 years’ experience in the Chemical, Manufacturing, Food & Beverage, Packaging industries

Education and Certifications: 

  • Four-year college degree in Engineering (Industrial, Chemical, or similar educational background).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Good understanding of continuous improvement techniques.
  • Knowledge of extrusion and converting processes and equipment.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing process development.
  • Ability to analyze, take measurement, compile and interpret data to put process recommendation forward.
  • Ability to design, and write detailed process documentation in a clear and presentable manner using computer software (MS Word, Excel etc.)
  • Ability to manage projects from conception to completion.
  • Ability to prioritize and self-direct decision-making.
  • Ability to apply understanding of continuous improvement techniques in a manufacturing setting, and to offer engineering recommendation to drive efficiency.
  • Ability to effectively work across functional and geographic boundaries.
  • Technically sound, ability to communicate effectively, and willing to manage and mentor junior employees.
