Job Description

Lab Tech (Chemistry)

Apex Life Sciences is looking for a Temporary Lab Technician in Wever, Iowa.  This position supports laboratory staff by maintaining logs and record books, troubleshooting and resolving problems; helping with special projects. The incumbent will conduct chemical laboratory tests to assist making qualitative and quantitative analyses of solids, liquids, and gaseous materials for purposes, such as research and development or processes, quality control, maintenance of environmental standards, and other work involving experimental, theoretical, or practical application of chemistry and related sciences.

Contract: Sept-Dec with the opportunity to be extended 


At a minimum, tasks will include:

  • Monitor product quality to ensure compliance to standards and specifications.
  • Set up and conduct chemical experiments, tests, and analyses using techniques such as chromatography, spectroscopy, chemical separation techniques, and microscopy.
  • Conduct chemical laboratory test to assist scientists in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of solids, liquids, and gaseous materials.
  • Compile and interpret results of test and analyses.
  • Provide technical interpret support and assistance to chemists and engineers.
  • Prepare chemical solutions for products and processes following standardized formulas, or create experimental formulas.
  • Maintain, clean and sterilize laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Write technical reports or prepare graphs and charts to document experimental results.
  • Develop and conduct programs of sampling and analysis to maintain quality standards of raw materials, chemical intermediates, and products.
  • Follow company safety and health guidelines and other company policies.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Physical requirements – bending, kneeling, lifting up to 25lbs.
  • Industrial chemical plant environment.
  • Noise levels may require hearing protection.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to gather and evaluate complex information.
  • Ability to use personal computer software for word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or closely related field is highly desired.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience supporting environmental compliance in the chemical industry or other industrial manufacturing, or analytical laboratory or environmental consulting.  Fertilizer manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • Principles and processes of chemical, biochemical and treatment of wastewater.
  • Standard analytical procedures for the analysis of water and wastewater.
  • Mathematics as applied to laboratory work.
  • Operation of gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer.
  • Use scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
  • Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to work in a fast pace, high stress environment.
  • Provide attention to detail and ability to produce results.
  • Ability to interact with team members and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to read and produce technical reports and diagrams of the manufacturing process.
