Job Description

An appropriately qualified Laboratory Assistant must be available in a reasonable timeframe to provide technical expertise in the following critical areas:

Sample prep, characterization and mechanical testing. Projects that this Assistant will work require hands-on experiments and the uses of a wide range of mechanical and tribological instruments, microscopy, and surface characterization that are typical for a materials laboratory. However, training on specific procedures, methods, and instruments used in the laboratory will be provided by the ANL Technical Representative or other staff scientists, but the individual must have experience with operating general equipment typically found in materials science or chemistry laboratories. Good oral and written communication skills are necessary as well as the basic ability to use Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Outlook, for communications, as well as Excel, Origin and similar software for data analysis and tracking.
Experience is also required in the following categories:
• Chemical conversion synthesis by electrochemical boriding using appropriate electrochemical cells and furnaces at high temperatures.
• Physical vapor deposition of nanocomposite coatings using sputtering and other vacuum deposition techniques.
• Mechanical and tribological testing of coated or treated samples
• Experience in using advanced surface analysis and characterization techniques including optical microscopy, non-contact surface topography devices, mechanical polishing and hardness testing.

In addition, the laboratory assistant must be capable of conducting measurements and operating analytical instruments in the laboratory overseen by the ANL Technical Representative and other staff scientists.

Contract employees are expected to work a standard 40-hour/week. However, the programmatic needs of individual research groups mandates that completion of the scheduled experiments has the highest priority. It is sometimes impossible to complete scheduled experiments in a normal work day (8 hours). Contract employees may be required to work overtime or on a weekend. Supervisors for individual research project will determine individual work schedules.

The minimum educational qualifications are as follows:
Laboratory Assistant - a B.S. in an engineering or scientific area and 3 years of relevant experience.
