  1. Summary of Position: Performs a wide range of sample preparation and/or analysis per published methods and Standard Operating Procedures, which may include specialized methods and independent activities.

  1. Direct Supervisor (Reports to): Laboratory Supervisor

  1.  Primary Responsibilities:
    1. Preparing and/or analyzing environmental samples based on published methods and Standard Operating Procedures.  Able to work more independently than Laboratory Analyst I and II.
    2. Following quality control procedures as outlined in documented procedures.
    3. Directing specific laboratory projects from set-up to completion.
    4. Preparing standards and reagents.
    5. Evaluating and performing calibrations.
    6. Documenting all lab activities in applicable logbooks and databases (e.g. sample prep, sample analysis, standard and reagent prep, instrument maintenance, etc.).
    7. Entering data into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) as applicable.
    8. Performing routine maintenance of equipment and instrumentation, including troubleshooting on multiple systems.
    9. Responsible for keeping applicable workspaces clean and safe.
    10. Disposing of samples and by-products per required procedures.
    11. Handling of waste products per required procedures.
    12. Reviewing data from other analysts, if applicable, and recognizing discrepancies in data.  Able to validate data from potentially several methods and instruments.
    13. Attending required company and department meetings.
    14. Completing required training activities within require timeframes.
    15. Leading method development and modifications as needed.
    16. Assisting with training of other analysts.
    17. Assisting with review and preparation of SOPs and training documents.
    18. Promoting cooperation and teamwork among staff.
    19. Following Pace policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    20. Other duties as assigned.

  1.   Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     1. Education and/or Experience: BA/BS in chemistry or related science plus 5 or more years related experience; or 10 years of related laboratory experience with no degree.
    2. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively at a highly technical level both verbally and in writing.
    3. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
    4. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  1.    Managerial Responsibilities
    1. Responsible for leading and supervising departmental activities in the absence of the Department Supervisor.

  1.   Responsibilities with respect to Performing Tests
    1. Responsible for performing tests (either sample preparation or analysis) based on published methods or Standard Operating Procedures.

  1.  Responsibilities with respect to Planning of Tests and Evaluation of Results
    1. Responsible for scheduling or planning sample preparation and/or analysis based on available information regarding due dates and hold times.
    2. Responsible for evaluating primary analyses including sample results and quality control results. 
    3. Responsible for evaluating other analyst’s work (peer review) as needed, including sample results and quality control results.

    1. Responsible for reporting opinions and interpretations for their specific functions via footnotes/qualifiers in LIMS.
