Job Description


Responsible for performing histological procedures to aid in diagnosis, research and instruction.  Assists in training, monitoring workflow and initiating safety and compliance activities.


1.         Prepares tissue samples for routine microscopic analysis.  These duties may include but are not limited to:

  1. Work output exceeds average output without sacrificing quality.
  2. Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of specimens.
  3. Ability to complete work tasks with minimal supervision.
  4. Chemical solutions and stains are prepared, labeled and stored accurately according to procedure and need.
  5. Stains are accurately performed and Quality Control (QC) results recorded.
  6. Stain quality is evaluated for acceptability prior to release of histological sections to the ordering pathologist.
  7. Stain quality results are communicated to the supervisor and/or ordering pathologist.
  8. Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures.
  9. Work output exceeds average output without sacrificing quality.
  10. Performs routine, complex and specialized tests with an understanding of quality assurance.
  11. Participates in research and development of new stains and methods.

2.         Maintains and operates laboratory equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and procedures.

3.         Initiates and participates in quality, safety and compliance programs.

4.         Demonstrates advanced problem solving/troubleshooting skills.

5.         Performs area-specific support/clinical activities.


1.         Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.

2.         Serves, manages and supports internal and external customers.

3.         Participates in performance improvement activities.

4.         Participates as a team member and is accountable for own work responsibilities.


  • Education:  Clinical education in a Histology Technician School (HT) program accredited by NAACLS  or the minimum required for HTL(ASCP)
  • Experience: 1 year experience in a Histology Laboratory.
  • License/Certification: HTL (ASCP) Certification or eligible. Certification within 18 months of hire.


Job requires sitting, standing for prolonged periods, frequently walking, bending/stooping; Repetitive motion: (embedding, microtomy, cover slipping).  Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs.  May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
