Job Description

Apex Life Sciences is looking for a Food Technology Intern! 

General Description

This position is responsible for assisting the making of new products, evaluating new raw materials/ingredients, and production techniques for the Flavor Systems, Powder Systems and Specialty Beverage Systems. Record results and provide recommendations in experimental and summary reports to management. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conform and follow all Safety Rules within the lab and plant.
  • Assist Technologists in the developing of new products for the appropriate group, which includes formulation and Nutritional analysis.
  • Assist in the process to complete projects in pilot plant, including projects using the steam kettle, blender, mixer, pumps, homogenizer, spray dryer, Glatt Agglomerator, or other equipment.  Record results from experiments.
  • Perform tests on new samples produced in the pilot plant to evaluate actual results compared to predicted results.  Complete formulation and application testing in the lab. 
  • Perform tests on current production materials as required by customer requests or assist Quality with evaluation of product complaints.
  • Work with Procurement to test alternate raw materials/ingredients in order to evaluate suitability for substitution in an existing production situation or new formula development. 
  • Maintain integrity of R&D laboratory environment through accurate test design and set up, good sanitary practices and maintenance of equipment in good working order.
  • Maintain accurate files of all R&D work completed. Maintain all project files and Lab Notebooks as required.
  • Participate in sensory analysis, physical testing and other methodology to fully test products as required.
  • Provide research and technical support in all marketing efforts across appropriate business pillar.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings.
  • Keep supervisor informed at all times.

Work Experience requirements

Experienced in the scientific method and design required. Knowledge with principals of food processing, food science, and food and dairy chemistry are desired for the job. Collaborative, problem solving, good communication and ability to work with minimal supervision, as well as with others are skills for good job performance. Detail oriented and multitasking is a must.  Basic computer skills required (Microsoft office).


Normal Office environment

Occasionally, must be able to work on their feet for extended periods of time in lab and pilot plant.  Will be required to lift and carry large packages.  Work environment may be noisy, wet, and slippery and hot at times. 

Education Requirements

High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Physical Chemistry, Food Technology, Food Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering or related physical science area is required.  0 - 5 years’ experience in New Product Development and work in a food laboratory in a dairy, spray drying, or food ingredient facility.  Study in the field of science recommended.
