JOB TITLE:   Field Chemist

Purpose

  • Coordinates with clients to segregate, classify, package and transport waste materials.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to: Director of Waste Management                               

Other:  Works with Logistics Coordinators, Sales Department and Safety Department

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions

Safety

  • Checks vehicle before driving to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
  • Performs vehicle inspections (pre-trip and post-trip) in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Follows appropriate safety procedures (e.g., DOT, OSHA, EPA, etc.) when transporting waste materials and general freight.
  • Maintains logs of working hours in accordance with U.S. DOT Hours of Service regulation
  • Secures cargo for transport, using ropes, blocks, chain, binders, and/or covers.
  • Reports vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations or damage to vehicles in accordance with company policy.
  • Maintains truck interior and safety of equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Verifies manifest information including load count, quantity, shipping name, etc.
  • Communicates need for service or repair of power unit or equipment operated.

Job Functions

  • Complies with and promotes all Company safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Keeps up to date on proper procedures including, but not limited to: safety, compliance, paperwork, USDOT requirements, sampling and segregation of chemicals.
  • Works with Waste Management Project Manager to schedule client pick-up and delivery.
  • Adheres to client’s specific Health & Safety Plan and General Job Guidelines
  • Direct the work of CDL Drivers, Environmental Technicians and Lab Pack Technicians when necessary.
  • Classifies and categorizes unknown materials.
  • Conducts field sampling activities and calibration of meters and other electronic equipment.
  • Routes waste materials to appropriate landfill, treatment facility or packaging destination as required.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by management and required by the needs of the Company.
  • Professional appearance and communication skills a must.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of field experience in waste management services, lab packing, profiling and shipment of waste into hazardous and non-hazardous disposal facilities or similar service business experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOT and EPA environmental regulations.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding and into and out of trucks, tanks and various other containers.
  • Must possess CDL Class B Driver License with HAZMAT endorsement.
  • Ability to wear and properly use a variety of Level A, B, C and D personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators, skin, face, hand and foot protection in a multiple number of combinations.
  • Ability to work extended (> 8 hrs.) time periods.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours beyond the normal schedule when necessary.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 20% of the time. (Some overnight may be required)
