Job Description



  • Execute fermentation experiments including: fermenter and media preparation, bioreactor sampling, fermenter cleaning, data entry, and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with the metabolic engineering team, ensure that results and conclusions are communicated clearly.
  • General lab work (e.g. Experiment set up and takedown, pipetting, sample processing).
  • Perform data analysis and engage in technical discussions including experimental planning.
  • Troubleshoot fermentation equipment as needed and resolve equipment issues efficiently to minimize equipment downtime.

Additional Responsibilities

The candidate will work under the supervision of fermentation scientists. The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with scientists in Lygos’s other departments including molecular biology, downstream processing, and analytical. Presenting results and work plans at weekly group meetings will be encouraged. The Lygos team works closely with all employees to support career development and facilitate the learning of new skill sets.

Education and Experience

  • B.S. degree in chemical engineering or related field.
  • 0 - 3 years fermentation experience in an industrial or academic setting.
  • Energetic, creative, team player.
  • Experienced with general lab procedures, sterile technique, data interpretation, reporting and comfortable in a fast-paced, multitasking environment.
  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, and collaboration.
  • Strong organization skills and proven ability to manage details.
  • Experience in a synthetic biology / biotech startup a plus.

Secondary Knowledge and Skill Considerations

  • HPLC or analytical expertise.
  • Strong hands-on technical abilities for maintaining and repairing basic lab equipment.
  • Experience cultivating a range of microorganisms a plus.
  • Experience in a synthetic biology/metabolic engineering startup a plus.
