EHS Specialist


Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in Environmental, Health and Safety, Occupational Health or Industrial Hygiene OR degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines:

Environmental Studies, Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, and engineering OR 5 years of equivalent specialized experience in or related to Environmental and Laboratory Services that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Experience with CAA, CWA & RCRA regulations
  • Experience with Biohazard, RMW, GMP and clean room environments.
  • Experience in laboratory, manufacturing, GMP, and facility environments.
  • Assist in the maintenance of all NJ site environmental permits - Applications for new environmental permits, including document preparation, submission, record keeping and monitoring.
  • Ability to conduct EHS training sessions in conjunction with compliance schedule, in addition to providing topic guidance to laboratory supervision.
  • Assist with the investigations of all workplace accidents and laboratory spills, conduct root cause analysis and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Knowledge of Hazardous material management, hazardous waste management and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to assist emergency response activities as related to EH&S and the site Emergency Response Plan
  • Build a culture of safety with employee involvement and responsible EH&S behavior with positive reinforcement, communications and real repercussions for flagrant disregard of safety procedures.
  • Assist with wastewater and hazardous waste regulatory compliance reports and inspections as needed.
  • Assist with monthly logs for Waste, Emissions, water discharge and monitor for trends.
  • Protect and improve company image as an environmental steward through internal and external activities
  • Participate in site laboratory, manufacturing area & facility inspections and audits and correspond with regulatory agencies.
  • Enforce OSHA EPA and NJDEP compliance and security standards at all sites.
  • Survey properties that store, handle, and use hazardous materials to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Perform a variety of safety inspections in workplaces covered by OSHA Act of 1970.
  • Document inspection/audit files, describes hazards in detail, proposes any abatement action required
  • Liaison between the Facilities / Engineering Departments and Construction contractors
  • Construction / remediation / abatement Safety regulation and Environmental compliance experience
  • Review historical documents for potential hazardous material as it relates to construction projects and make recommendations to support the project teams
  • Assist with Regulatory Compliance program development
  • Coordinate and/or perform spill clean-up of chemicals
  • Maintain required training with agencies such as; FDA, EPA, NJDEP, DOT/IATA and OSHA

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and strategies to promote effective local, state or federal environmental health and safety operations for the protection of people, property and the environment
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, be a team player and be willing to work in an environment where individual initiative and accountability to the team are required
  • Environmental, Safety and Industrial Hygiene expertise and experience
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Good understanding of chemical safety information and storage, chemical and medical waste storage and
  • Proficient in DOT and EPA regulations for the transport and storage of chemical Products
  • Effective written and oral communications skills at all levels as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Good accident/incident investigative interview and listening skills.
  • Use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problem solving.
  • Good Computer skills including word processing, presentations, spreadsheets and research.
  • Ability to analyze work processes and conditions, identifying and eliminating/controlling safety and occupational health hazards.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards relating to construction and general industry.
  • Experience with OSHA in Construction Standards, i.e. Confined Space, Hot Work, Elevated Work
  • Experience with hazardous materials in construction, i.e. asbestos, lead based paint, PCBs, mold

  • Hazardous materials transportation. 49 CFR 172.704(1)(2)(3)(4)
  • Blood-borne pathogens training. 29 CFR 1910.1030
  • RCRA Training 40 CFR Part 265.16
  • OSHA 30 Hour Training in Construction a plus
